Lemon eucalyptus oil, the common name of one of the natural oils obtained from the lemon-scented gum eucalyptus plant, has gained popularity as an insect repellant. It is generally safe for most adults when applied to skin as a mosquito repellent.

Citronella oil is also a plant-based insect repellent, and has been registered for this use in the United States since 1948.
